Released Patients

the Rehabilitation Journey

Since 1977, Sea Turtle, Inc. has been committed to the rehabilitation of sick and injured sea turtles. We treat approximately 40 – 100+ sea turtles each year a variety of issues including but not limited to fibropapillomatosis (FP), entanglement, hook ingestion, boat strikes, impactions, predator attacks, and mass cold stranding events. Every one of our patients receives a physical exam, comprehensive x-rays and blood work, and their own treatment plan based on the cause of stranding. From rescue to release, every step of the way is closely monitored by our dedicated rehab staff. Sea Turtle, Inc. has treated and released hundreds of sea turtles in the past 40 years.

Once a patient has been approved for release by our veterinary staff, their release site is chosen depending upon the species of the turtle. Green sea turtles are usually released via a sunset cruise/dolphin watch boat trip in the Laguna Madre Bay here on South Padre Island, Texas. Loggerheads are usually released on the Gulf side of Isla Blanca Park, and Kemp’s ridleys and hawksbills are taken on private, off-shore releases. Every public release will be announced on our social media pages.

Later this year, we are going to completely renovate and expand our hospital. When it is completed in 2020, our new veterinary clinic will include a surgical suite, treatment area, lead-lined x-ray room, and a blood work station. There will be a ground-to-ceiling viewing window into our treatment room/surgical suite which will allow for our visitors to watch treatments and procedures. Mark your calendars for summer 2020 to come check out our new hospital!
