Growing up in a farm fostered my love for animals, but it wasn’t until I got to experience being around marine life that my love for these creatures began. I am from a small town on the outskirts of El Paso, Texas, and I graduated with a B.S. in Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Ecology from New Mexico State University. My junior year I did a semester abroad in Costa Rica. During this time as part of each course, we had to go on multiple excursions which not only allowed me to gain hands-on experience working with sea turtles, rays and shark fins but also fall in love with these majestic creatures. Summer 2017, I went back to CR and volunteered with Equipo Tora Carey. Throughout my time there I learned to identify sea turtle tracks, nests, and species. I gained a wide variety of experience and skills in measuring, tagging and sampling nesting sea turtles. During an overnight beach patrol, I was fortunate enough to experience first-hand the hatching of an Olive Ridley nest. The following night with the help of other volunteers and a Sea Shepherd Crew we released 72 hatchlings. Words can’t describe how excited I am to be a part of Sea Turtle Inc. and work with sea turtles again!
